How Acupuncture Can Treat Sports Injuries
Acupuncture has been used over the centuries to treat a number of different conditions, but few people may associate acupuncture with treating sports-related injuries. However, acupuncture has been a proven treatment for the pain and healing of certain types of these injuries for the past several years.
Today, more people are turning towards acupuncture for the treatment of their injuries due to sports or related activities. The unique properties of acupuncture are now being used to help people overcome their injuries and put them on the fast track towards recovery.
What are Sports Injuries?
Most people naturally associate sports injuries to those that occur when playing or training in sports activities. From being injured on the field to in the gym and beyond, sports injuries actually cover a very broad field. While the injuries can range from very minor incidents such as a twisted ankle or even sore muscles to much more serious conditions that require hospitalization, there are basically two types of sports injuries that can occur.
Acute Traumatic Injury: This is an injury which results from the application of force, such as an impact caused by a collision with another player. These impact injuries can be minor or major in nature, but they are always the result of a single incident which injures the athlete.
Overuse Injury: Also called a “chronic” injury, this is where muscles, tendons or cartilage is worn down over repeated, extended use during a period of time. Repetitive training often causes these types of injuries to occur.
Sprains and strains are generally the most common types of sports injuries which consists of pain, inflammation, discoloration and limited mobility in the affected joint. It is these types of injuries that have responded well to acupuncture treatments.
The Effects of Acupuncture on Sports Related Injuries
With the type of minor injuries that acupuncture treats, the athletes generally report a deep and dull type of pain, weakness in the area and sometimes a sensation of “pins and needles” along with numbness which is associated in these types of injuries. Acupuncture has proven to be quite effective in helping to alleviate the pain and even decrease the amount of healing time that is needed.
In fact, there are many professional sports teams that have an acupuncturist on their staff to treat minor, but stubborn or painful injuries so that the athlete can get back on the team quicker and with less pain. The act of acupuncture itself helps the body to zero in and make the healing process go even faster. Along with its healing attributes, many athletes also use acupuncture to help them become better prepared for their athletic endeavors as well, even if they are not injured.
There are now specific acupuncture treatments for many different types of sports related injuries which have helped athletes recover more quickly and even improve their performance while reducing the pain and swelling associated with their injuries. For many, acupuncture has proven to be the best means of recovery when suffering from minor injuries either caused by impacts or overuse of the tissues.
